SHAWE ACADEMICS

Shawe Memorial strives to create an atmosphere conducive to high academic achievement and personal growth. This atmosphere provides an opportunity for students to meet their individual potential and to develop healthy relationships and appropriate behaviors that ensure academic success.

Shawe Memorial Junior/Senior High School assists parents in the education of their children by providing a dynamic Catholic education which promotes individual growth in virtue through the development of God-given talents. Each student is expected to make the most of his or her God-given talents and abilities. Students are to set high, but realistic goals for themselves, create a plan to achieve those goals, and to consistently work towards the meeting of their own academic goals.

Theology Program Of Studies

The primary goal of Shawe Memorial Jr/Sr High School is to enable our students to integrate their faith into their daily lives. As a Catholic school, we offer a variety of experiences to nurture our students’ relationship with God and to strengthen their relationship with the Church. For students of other faiths, our spiritual formation program introduces them to the tenets of the Catholic Church and provides them opportunities to enrich their own Christian heritage.

Junior High: Introduction to Catholicism

Shawe Junior High religious studies explore the basic tenets of the faith in a course titled Introduction to Catholicism. The curriculum explains what it means to be Catholic. The following topics are covered over two years:

  • Church
  • Prayer
  • Holiness
  • The Trinity
  • The Creed
  • The Blessed Virgin Mary
  • Sacred Scripture / The Old and New Testaments
  • The Ten Commandments – A study of each
  • The Sacraments – A study of each
  • The Rosary & Mysteries of the Rosary
  • The Saints

High School:

 

Grade 9 (Semester 1): The Revelation of Jesus Christ in Scripture

The purpose of this course is to give students a general knowledge and appreciation of the Sacred Scriptures.  Through their study of the Bible they will come to encounter the living Word of God, Jesus Christ.  In the course they will learn about the Bible, authored by God through Inspiration, and its value to people throughout the world.  If they have not been taught this earlier, they will learn how to read the Bible and will become familiar with the major sections of the Bible and the books included in each section.  The students will pay particular attention to the Gospels, where they may grow to know and love Jesus Christ more personally.  The following topics are covered:

  • How Do We Know About God?
  • About Sacred Scripture
  • Understanding Scripture
  • Overview of the Bible
  • The Gospels

Grade 9 (Semester 2):  Who is Jesus Christ?

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the mystery of Jesus Christ, the living Word of God, the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity.  In this course students will understand that Jesus Christ is the ultimate Revelation to us from God.  In learning about who He is, the students will also learn who He calls them to be.  The following topics are covered:

  • God and Revelation
  • Jesus Christ’s Revelation About God
  • The Mystery of the Incarnation
  • Jesus Christ Teaches Us About Ourselves

 

Grade 10 (Semester 1): The Mission of Jesus Christ

The purpose of this course is to help students understand all that God has done for us through his Son, Jesus Christ.  Through this course study, students will learn that for all eternity, God has planned for us to share eternal happiness with Him, which is accomplished through the redemption Christ won for us.  Students will learn that they share in this redemption only in and through Jesus Christ.  They will also be introduced to what it means to be a disciple of Christ and what life as a disciple entails.  Topics covered include:

  • The Goodness of Creation and Our Fall from Grace
  • The Promise of a Messiah
  • Christ Our Light: Redemption Unfolds
  • Redemption Through the Paschal Mystery
  • Moral Implications for the Life of a Believer
  • Prayer in the Life of a Believer

Grade 10 (Semester 2): Jesus Christ’s Mission Continues in the Church

The purpose of this course is to help the students understand that in and through the Church they encounter the living Jesus Christ.  They will be introduced to the fact that the Church was founded by Christ through the Apostles and is sustained by Him through the Holy Spirit.  The students will come to know that the Church is the living Body of Christ today.  This Body has both divine and human elements.  In this course, students will learn not so much about events in the life of the Church but about the sacred nature of the Church.  Topics covered include:

  • Christ Established His One Church to Continue His Presence and His Work
  • Images of the Church 
  • The Marks of the Church
  • The Church in the World
  • Implications for Life of a Believer

 

Grade 11 (Semester 1): Sacraments as Privileged Encounters with Jesus Christ

The purpose of this course is to help students understand that they can encounter Christ today in a full and real way in and through the sacraments, and especially through the Eucharist.  Students will examine each of the sacraments in detail so as to learn how they may encounter Christ throughout life.  Topics include:

  • Sacramental Nature of the Church
  • Sacraments of Initiation
  • Sacraments of Healing
  • Sacraments at the Service of Communion
  • Challenges to Worship and Sacraments

Grade 11 (Semester 2): Life in Jesus Christ

The purpose of this course is to help students understand that it is only through Christ that they can fully live out God’s plans for their lives. Students are to learn the moral concepts and precepts that govern the lives of Christ’s disciples.  Topics include:

  • What is Life in Christ?
  • God Has Taught Us How to Live a New Life in Christ
  • Living New Life in Christ Jesus and the Gospel Message are the Basis for Catholic Moral Teaching
  • The Reality of Sin

 

Grade 12 (Semester 1): Living as a Disciple of Jesus Christ in Society

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the Church’s social teaching.  In this course, students are to learn how Christ’s concern for others, especially the poor and needy, is present today in the Church’s social teaching and mission.  Topics include:

  • God’s Plan for His People
  • Social Teaching of the Church
  • Major Themes of Catholic Social Teaching
  • Sin and Its Social Dimensions

Grade 12 (Semester 2): Responding to the Call of Jesus Christ

The purpose of this course is to help students to understand the vocations of life: how Christ calls us to live.  In this course, students should learn how all vocations are similar and how they differ.  The course should be structured around married life, single life, priestly life and consecrated life.  Students should learn what it means to live life for the benefit of others and the value in considering a vocation in service to the Christian community.  Topics include:

  • God’s Call to Each of Us
  • Serve One Another
  • Sacrament of Marriage
  • Sacrament of Holy Orders
  • The Consecrated Life

Diploma Requirements (through the Class of 2028)

Students may earn the Indiana Core 40 Diploma or Indiana Core 40 with Academic Honors Diploma. In addition to the course and credit requirements outlined by the Indiana Department of Education, students must take a religion course every semester enrolled at Shawe. Therefore students who attend Shawe for all four years of high school must earn a total of 8 credits in religion.

For the Core 40 with Academic Honors diploma, students must:

  • Complete all requirements for Core 40.
  • Earn 2 additional Core 40 math credits.
  • Earn 6-8 Core 40 world language credits (6 credits in one language or 4 credits each in two languages).
  • Earn 2 Core 40 fine arts credits.
  • Earn a grade of a “C” or better in courses that will count toward the diploma.
  • Have a grade point average of a “B” or better.
  • Complete one of the following:
    • Earn 4 credits in 2 or more AP courses and take corresponding AP exams
    • Earn 6 verifiable transcripted college credits in dual credit courses from the approved dual credit list.
    • Earn a combined score of 1750 or higher on the SAT critical reading, mathematics and writing sections and a minimum score of 530 on each
    • Earn an ACT composite score of 26 or higher and complete written section
    • Earn 4 credits in IB courses and take corresponding IB exams.
    • Earn two of the following:
      • A minimum of 3 verifiable transcripted college credits from the approved dual credit list,
      • 2 credits in AP courses and corresponding AP exams
      • 2 credits in IB standard level courses and corresponding IB exams.

 

Indiana Diploma and Readiness Seals

Indiana has redesigned high school graduation requirements beginning with the Class of 2029 (earlier opt-in available). The new Indiana Diploma and Readiness Seals emphasize personalized electives, work-based learning opportunities, credentials of value and include a total of 7 new diplomas.  Shawe will offer 4 diplomas including the Indiana Diploma, Enrollment Honors Seal, Employment Honors Seal, and Enrollment Honors Plus Seal.  

Indiana public universities and additional select colleges in the state will automatically admit students who earn the Enrollment Honors Plus Seal.

The following outlines the main changes with the new diploma and seal requirements.

New Diploma

  • Personal Finance & Responsibility course (1 credit)
  • College & Careers course (1 credit)
  • Computing for a Digital Age course (1 credit)
  • Public Speaking course (1 credit)
  • Physical Education (or alternative) (1 credit, instead of 2 credits)

Enrollment Honors Seal

  • Chemistry (2 credits)
  • 2 years of world language (instead of 3 years)
  • No Fine Arts requirement 

Enrollment Honors Plus Seal

  • Credential of value such as the Indiana College Core (ICC)
  • 75 hours of work-based learning
